Happy Junkanoo!
While celebrations elsewhere are centered on midnight, in the Bahamas the BIG parties are the Junkanoo parades that traditionally begin January 1 around 4 a.m. After the famous Junkanoo “rush out,” dancing in the streets goes on until sunrise. Then locals head to breakfast to enjoy either souse (boiled stew of fish, lamb or chicken), stew fish (a fish stew) or a fire engine (what the local call corned beef and grits with hot sauce).
According to records, the weather in the Bahamas in January is pleasant with the average high temperature in the upper 70s and evening lows in the upper 60s. Water temperature is around 70 •F and winds are predominantly out of the north. No wonder when George Washington visited the Bahamas he dubbed them “The Isles of Perpetual June.” ...
