PAST ISSUES

Lighting My Fire
Reading your December issue really got my juices flowing. The chartering focus brought back fond childhood memories of our bareboat family charters through the Bahamas. These days I do most of my boating in the Carolinas. This usually involves sportfishing in conditions that are not always appealing to my children. I would love for my children to have their own memories and develop the same love for boating that Ihave. Perhaps a charter in the Bahamas is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks, Southern Boating, for encouraging me to get my family involved in my hobby.

Even Better
I love reading your magazine and I especially enjoyed this year’s Fort Lauderdale Boat Show Preview [November]. I was making my way around the show on crutches this year with limited mobility (due to a tennis-related injury, not a boating one!), and I found the show preview to be an indispensable guide to help me easily find my way to the good stuff.
The RIB article was also very helpful as my family was in the market for a new RIB. We ended up purchasing a Zodiac. It was a great buying experience and they even delivered our new boat to our home in the Keys where we plan to use it–and I can’t wait now that I just got off my crutches!

Dear Skip Sr.,
I simply wanted you and your entire “family” to know how much I have enjoyed your publication over the last thirty years! Iwas delighted to receive your September, 2007, 35th year issue recently. Congratulations!
You and your magazine have been a great supporter of Antigua, Curtain Bluff Resort and Antigua Race Week over the years. For that Ithank you.
I thought you might like to know that the very first issue of Southern Boating I ever bought (and still have it!) was the April 1978 issue with Joe Pelican on the cover.
Congratulations on all of your past and future successes.

A Taxing Situation in
Charleston, SC
I enjoyed reading your article on Charleston, South Carolina. What you may not know is that in 2006, the state of South Carolina changed the law regarding documented vessels. If you keep your documented vessel in the state for 60 consecutive days or 90 days total in a calendar year you are required to pay South Carolina personal property tax on your vessel. The tax varies by county, but I know of an owner that got a tax bill of $8,000 for his boat. This is not like sales tax where you pay it once, they can tax you each year.
Until they change the law, don't plan on spending too much time in Charleston.

Get Your Fix
I really enjoyed learning about the new Furuno NavNet 3D system in the December issue. Iconsider myself somewhat of a technology junkie, and it’s nice to know I can always count on Southern Boating to debut the latest. Thanks!
