Crafting a Memory
North Andros presents a totally different
world to those willing to venture away
from the flats and into the forest.
Andros, taken together with its cays and the tiny islets of the Middle Bight, is the largest of the Bahamas islands. Unlike most of the islands, it has freshwater lakes and hardwood forests, which create a different way of life and an agricultural base for the island. Life on Andros focuses on the eastern shore, most of it at Andros Town, which is how my husband, Bruce, and I came to be at Fresh Creek on our catamaran, Nice-n-Easy. Fresh Creek, noted as one of the island’s best harbors, proved to be the perfect place to stay while my husband was away on business. It hosts a welcoming live-aboard community at a marina with all the amenities I could ever need, plus the bread lady passes by twice weekly and a farmer arrives each Friday with a van full of fresh seasonal produce. The live-aboards here are a mix of Atlantic Underwater Testing and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) workers from the local Navy base and cruisers who make it their winter home.
