Faria Goes Up Tempo

Aptly named Maestro allows skippers to conduct
digital vessel management symphonies.

Faria, an old name in marine instrumentation, is launching a new product and, in the process, entering a new market. Although the Maestro is an ambitious offering for this firm, the Faria name should be familiar to readers. Thomas G. Faria Corporation has been manufacturing gauges in Uncasville, Connecticut, for more than 50 years. Today, it provides top-of-the-line analog and digital monitoring instrumentation to a multitude of civilian and military markets and is the leading supplier of engine instruments to the recreational boat market.

Faria calls the Maestro a “touch-screen navigation and command center,” and they aren’t kidding: It’s a chart plotter with radar, 3D contour map and aerial photo overlay. It’ll display 3D sonar renderings, all engine data for which you have sensors, XM weather forecasts, and images from up to four remote control cameras. Each unit can support two touch-screen interfaces plus an additional S-video television monitor. It can connect to the Internet over wi-fi, GSM or satellite. Finally, it includes software for home planning on your PC; create your plan, copy it to a USB thumb drive and bring it aboard with you. ...
