The Transom
Yamaha’s F350 5.3-liter, four-stroke engine is
currently the world’s most powerful outboard.
Designing and building a 350-horsepower V-8 gasoline fuel injected engine is not particularly challenging, until you tell the engineers that it has to be mounted on the transom of a boat, include power operated tilt, a reverse gear, an appropriately sized propeller, withstand the harsh environment of the open ocean, have digital electronic throttle and shift control, a complete monitoring and diagnostic system, and deliver more than 0.4 horsepower per pound.
