St. Petersburg, Florida, was the first city I lived in as a grown-up and that will always give it special meaning to me. Oh sure, friends laughed when I announced I was moving there after college, but I wanted to sail, and St. Petersburg was big in both offshore and One-design sailing events. Back in the day, St. Petersburg had a few disparaging nicknames among my social set; “Wrinkle City” comes to mind. Yes, the city had a preponderance of retirees, but after two years inland in Tampa, I saw attractive water access, a glorious beach on the Gulf of Mexico, and a dozen little satellite communities each with their own quirky style. ...
