Engine In Your Boat
It’s likely that the engine that powers your boat was initially designed to power a car, truck or a farm tractor. Modifying a mass-produced vehicle engine for marine engine service makes utmost sense in terms of engine technology, performance, durability, purchase price, and maintenance cost.
Vehicle engines have been adapted for use in boats since the first internal combustion engines were built. With few exceptions, the marine market is not large enough to justify the design and tooling expense for an engine limited to marine use. In the 1930s and ’40s the major U.S. car manufacturers, Chrysler, Ford and GM, ran ads in yachting magazines promoting the use of their engines to powerboats.
