Developing a
Taste for the

Turks & Caicos

If you examine an antique chart of the southern Atlantic, you’ll find a tiny atoll 575 miles east of Miami, Florida, called Belle Island. Today, you can find “Belongers,” as the local call themselves, who remember when the scrubby, low-slung island was uninhabited–and they may still be in elementary school. That’s because the island, long ago renamed West Caicos, recently sprouted a luxury resort/condo development (a Ritz-Carlton Reserve) almost overnight.

West Caicos is the westernmost point in the Turks and Caicos and usually the first land sighting for cruisers traveling from the U.S. The development on West Caicos is significant if only for its symbolism. All around the 40-island archipelago, developments are popping up faster than the red blooms on the islands’ ubiquitous Turks’ Head cactus. That means more marinas, more services and all the more reason to put Turks and Caicos on your must-visit list–whether it’s to take advantage of the new luxury amenities or to catch a glimpse ...
