Sciocco Propulsion Fabricates a Solution for Repowering:
Can heli-technology fan a revolution?
Volvo Penta IPS and the Cummins Mercruiser Zeus vectored thrust propulsion systems have achieved well-deserved success this past year, including installations in displacement and planing hull vessels. However, these systems are available only in new boats. Existing yachts with traditional inclined shaft systems have been left behind, using propellers that always operate at significantly less than optimum efficiency, creating asymmetric thrust that wastes fuel when powering ahead and bedeviling anyone attempting to back a single screw vessel.
Owners of yachts with conventional props will applaud the new Ottimale Sistema Beccheggio Elica Ottimale (SistemaBEO™) propulsion system just announced by Scioccodiaprile, AG of Modena, Italy, makers of the Propulsion/ Maneuvering System (Southern Boating April 2007). The surprising SistemaBEO system uses helicopter control technology to significantly improve efficiency of the propellers on conventionally powered yachts. How can this be? ...
