Gulf Coast Report Snapper fisheries, scenic river trails and salt domes on tap Weather continued to be unpredictable and unseasonable along the Gulf coast as 2008 began. Days of near 70-degree weather in January were bracketed by days with lows approaching the freezing mark. Similarly, strong north winds pushed tides to extreme lows, but even slight easterlies often produced higher than normal tide stages. April should bring spring to the Gulf, but there are already signs of a different sort of year ahead, and the weather is not the only variable ... Madisonville, Louisiana, a small town in St. Tammany Parish across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans, is considering a zoning change that would ban living on houseboats in the city limits. ... “Alabama Scenic River Trail” under development The Alabama Tourism Department and a group of volunteers plan a 631-mile scenic river trail for boating enthusiasts–especially those favoring paddle sports. ... Mississippi split on petroleum storage site The U.S. Dept. of Energy, through the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, maintains several crude oil storage facilities along the Gulf coast to stockpile and protect a reserve of oil for national emergencies. ...
