A new museum focuses
on historic Bahamian lighthouses
Sometimes the strangest things happen over a bottle of beer. Florida resident Doug Shephard remembers clearly how kicking back with a cold brew in the company of Dave Gale got him into the lighthouse repair business. The fact that he and his wife, Jane, now own the Bahamas Lighthouse Museum in Nassau is a story with a more confused history.
“One summer about seventeen years ago we were on vacation in the Abacos and happened to meet Dave Gale,” begins Doug. “He was a real character, I mean he lives on his own island, Parrot Cay. How cool is that? One day we were hanging out, drinking beers and looking at the Elbow Cay Light on the west side of the harbor at Hope Town. Dave was saying what a pity it was that its paint was peeling and that it was in a general state of disrepair. ....
