Family and friends are essential to the boating experience, a fact that Scout Boats, based in Summerville, South Carolina, takes to heart. The company, founded by Steve Potts, will soon be 20 years old. As a teen-ager, Steve worked for a boatyard in Charleston building a popular 14-footer called a Scout. When he ventured into business for himself, he sought permission to use the Scout name. He bought a shed and three molds to produce flats-type boats from 13 to 17 feet.
