Junkanoo

Summertime brings long, warm, lazy days of fishing, sunning and above all, the slow pace of the tropics. June 1 is an official holiday in the Bahamas–Labour Day–and will feature beach activities, parades and church services.
The driving beat of the Junkanoo brings the nights alive, and dancing in the streets is the order of the day. For those of you who may not be familiar with the term “Junkanoo,” it is said to have many origins, but the result is a truly Bahamian experience that combines Carnival and Mardi Gras all in one big parade/party/ celebration.
Normally Junkanoo marks the New Year, but for the summer season, the Bahamas Tourism Office does its level best to see that everyone gets a chance to experience the Junkanoo beat. Bahamas Tourism sponsors Junkanoo Festivals throughout the 700 islands during June, and you should make an effort to take in one of these parties. At a Junkanoo celebration, you will be invited to “rush out” or join in the dancing that follows along with the Junkanoo parade.
