People. Parties. Perfect sailing conditions. These attributes describe just about every Caribbean regatta. What made the third annual Heineken Culebra International Regatta unique is summed up in the feel-good phrase bandied about by sailors whether they were en route to the start line or rafted up at sunset debating the tactics of the day, “This is how Caribbean regattas used to be!”
“Everyone who is here is here to sail, everyone knows everyone. There’s a certain camaraderie, an air of friendly competition,” says Geoffrey Pidduck, an avid sailor from Antigua who flew north to this Puerto Rican island to serve as one of three International Judges. “This is in contrast to some of the bigger Caribbean regattas where over half the fleet are bareboaters from all parts of the globe.”...
