A Short Course in the Importance of Celestial Navigation

Lots of us get on our boats, turn on the electronics and set off, hardly bothering to look at the sky unless threatening clouds capture our attention. When we want to sail to a destination beyond the horizon or return to the place where we caught all those fish, we simply turn on our GPS, select a waypoint and press the Go-To key. We know our position, usually to within a few feet. Our navigation may be precise and efficient, but we have traded off awareness of the endless variety of nature’s navigation systems for what’s on our LCD screens. ...
