Nordic Tug debuted in1980, and while the Burlington, Washington, builder has added larger models to its line-up, it’s not until now that there has been a fundamental change in design philosophy. Nordic chose its smallest model, the 32-footer, as its design change test bed.
The modification, from a traditional semi-displacement hull with the propeller shaft exiting the keel, to a tunnel hull with recessed prop, represents the first input from Nordic’s new naval architect Howard Apollonio, who has taken up the reins of the late Lynn Senour, Nordic’s original designer.
The new configuration allows the vessel to float slightly higher in the bow, but the real reason for the change is in keeping with Nordic’s ongoing quest for fuel efficiency. By creating the opportunity for a more nearly horizontal shaft angle, the chosen engine delivers more forward thrust and can accommodate a larger, more efficient propeller. ...
