Take it From the Top

New or old, a cool top or tower makes the boat

Whether you are the proud owner of a new boat, or the equally proud owner of a trusted, dependable craft you’ve knocked around in for years, you’ll probably agree that the top makes the boat in terms of functionality and looks.\

T-top manufacturers say that the latest wrinkle in tops for center consoles and express fishermen is learning how to deal with the speeds delivered by boats with triple and quad engine installations and with the acceleration loads produced when these high-powered machines encounter–or fall off of–big waves.

“Little center consoles didn’t used to go far offshore and they didn’t used to go much over twenty knots. Today, there are many center consoles over thirty-four feet and with a thousand horsepower on the transom, they’ll do seventy miles an hour,” says Dave Meisman of Quality T-Tops in Tarpon Springs, Florida. “We have to overbuild because the boats are overpowered.” ...
