The Legend Turns 50

In 1961, the legend of Boston Whaler’s unsinkability was born when Dick Fisher had a 13-foot Whaler sawed in half and drove away in the half with the engine. This remarkable feat appeared in LIFE magazine.

This summer in Boston, Massachusetts, a veritable icon in the world of boating will celebrate a milestone birthday: the Boston Whaler company turns 50. Never mind that Whaler is now headquartered in Edgewater, Florida, the birthday bash is a return to roots, so to speak, as the first Whaler was a Boston backyard-built boat and the first production facility was in Braintree, Massachusetts.

The story of Boston Whaler is inextricably linked with the story of Richard T. “Dick” Fisher, an inventor, perfectionist and tinkerer, who was not afraid to roll up his sleeves. In the post-World War ’40s this Harvard grad and a partner named Bob Pierce operated a successful equipment company where they invented and produced cutting-edge electrical devices such as photo-controls, electromagnetic relays, sensors, and switches. ...
