A sailmaker, inventor and yacht designer, Ted Hood is an integral part of the fabric of modern yachting. In 1950, he moved his ad hoc sail loft from his parent’s living room to a storefront and within a few years was selling sails to top racing yachts. In 1959, he skippered his first Robin to win four out of seven races at the New York Yacht Club’s Annual Cruise. While his sailmaking business continued to grow, Hood’s business plan took a different path than his cross-continent rival and contemporary, Lowell North of North Sails, with the design and building of a series of keel and centerboard yachts named Robin or Robin Too or even Robin Too II. After skippering the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Courageous to a successful defense of the America’s Cup in 1974, he even tried his hand at designing 12-Meters. ...
