Opti Team Racing Championship Fosters Teamwork
The old saying, “There is no ‘I’ in team” holds true in sailboat racing. Just ask the kids who participated in the 2nd Annual Florida State Optimist Team Race Championships hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 19-20. Presented by McLaughlin Boat Works of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the regatta pitted teams of sailors 15 years or younger sailing International Optimist Dinghies (Optis) in fast-paced races of four against four.
Most young sailors spend the majority of their Opti career sailing in fleet races, where the goal is to win each race as an individual. In these matches, however, teamwork is stressed over finishing in first place. It’s better for team members to finish close in rank than to have one member finish first and others come in far later. ...
