Finding the Forgotten Coast
Port St. Joe serves up scallops and
the simple life on Florida’s Gulf shore

You can tell when it’s five o’clock in Port St. Joe without looking at your watch. At five, a daily ritual begins when the first sportfisherman in a parade of charter boats glides into the marina. This day, Lady J has returned with what seems like enough catch to provide filets for everyone in town. As I enjoyed an appetizer of alligator tail served with white remoulade sauce at the Dockside Café, I watched the crowd watching the anglers unload redfish from seemingly bottomless ice chests aboard each boat.

“The fishing is great here because the warm water meets the cool,” says Aurora Meyer, manager of the 128-slip Port St. Joe Marina. “St. Joseph Bay is an aquatic preserve.” ...
