Notes From the Small Vessel Security Summit:
How do we balance protecting our
waters while also protecting boating?

Marine industry representatives and media converged in Washington, D.C., June 19-20, 2007, at the request of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to discuss small vessel security in U.S. waters.

Small vessels include commercial and recreational vessels under 300 gross tons, excluding yachts that already adhere to security measures under the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) of 2002 and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

The goal at the Summit was to start a frank and open dialogue with the marine industry, including representatives of the boat-owning public, as to what DHS and USCG consider current safety and security threats and request input from those affected. ...
