It’s Quiet Time in the Islands

October is traditionally the most laid-back time in the Bahamas. Many of the tourist establishments are closed this month to allow refurbishing of resorts, restaurants and other facilities with an eye toward the coming season. If you plan a trip, be certain that the places you want to visit are open during your sojourn.

Lobster season is in full swing, but remember that stone crab season doesn’t open until October 15. We are also waiting with baited breath for the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources to release the latest amendments to the sportfishing regulations. Word is that there will be some loosening of the rules regarding certain species.

After a short scare at Nassau’s famous straw market, the U.S. ban on straw products has been clarified and does not affect the Bahamas. Straw products from 34 other countries are now banned in the U.S. due to the possibility that they might contain a tiny critter called a red palm mite, which can be a devastating pest. Fortunately, traditional Bahamian straw products are made with dried fronds, which do not provide a host for the tiny freeloaders, so all you souvenir hunters can relax. ...
