The Charleston
This scenic city lures countless visitors with its romantic setting, remarkable history and renowned hospitality.
As the locals say–with only a slight nod to hubris–where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet to form the Atlantic, you’ll find Charleston, the fourth largest shipping port on the east coast and South Carolina’s haven for cruisers.
Located halfway between the Chesapeake Bay and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on the edge of the Intracoastal Waterway, Charleston’s numerous marinas and boatyards make it an excellent stopover for attending to your boat’s needs. While your boat is being serviced, replenish the larder and take a break from the galley at gourmet restaurants onshore. Tours of plantations, gardens, museums, battlefield sites, and monuments, plus concerts, art shows and myriad festivals provide welcome diversions.
Charleston’s culture and love for the good life has its roots in the man for which it is named, England’s King Charles II. Robert Rosen, a Charleston historian, wrote in A Short History of Charleston that the king was, “one of the most hedonistic of English monarchs,” and that the colonists came, “to recreate the luxurious, cosmopolitan, pleasure-filled world of Restoration England.” Certainly this mission was a far cry from that of the Puritans settling in Massachusetts. ...
