Mini-VSAT Broadband
service hits the high seas

Providing satellite Internet connections and telephone service at sea has been largely restricted to the domain of commercial ships or megayachts equipped with global communications systems. The technology required for such services necessitates large, bulky hardware that comes with an exorbitant price tag. Not to mention the massive data transfer fees that users pay to take advantage of the services. To make maritime communications services more affordable to cruisers, terrestrial VSAT (very small aperture terminal) technology was adapted for life at sea, which uses Ku-Band satellites in geosynchronous orbit about 22,500 miles above the equator. This lowered the data transfer expenses but still required massive antenna domes, complicated installations and the difficulties of dealing with multiple source providers. ...
