Mercury’s 300-hp Verado
Mercury “Forges” A Magic Trick
Mercury recently introduced its most powerful Verado engine to the press in Sarasota, Florida. This six-cylinder engine produces 300 horsepower (224 kW), 25 more than last year’s highest rated offering, without increasing the displacement or weight of the engine. (All of Mercury’s six-cylinder Verados–the 225, 250, 275, and the new 300–weigh-in at 635 pounds.) How did Murcury’s engineering team wring the extra power out of the block? It’s an amazing trick.
We were surprised when we reviewed the details of the new engine’s specifications and found that the power increase has been accomplished not only without a change in displacement, but also without raising maximum rpm or by increasing supercharger boost pressure. The only change we noted in the engine’s 33-item specification list was in the final drive gear ratio, changed to 1.75:1 from the 1.85:1 used on the company’s other sixes. ...
