Paul Larson would probably feel quite comfortable aboard the latest offering from the Minnesota company bearing his name. Its design, that of a good-natured day boat, would be a familiar concept to the man who began building wooden boats on the Mississippi River as a teenager in 1913. By all accounts, Paul loved designing boats and in 1938 his early duck hunting craft were joined by a radical runabout he called the Falls Flyer. The gorgeous little boat sported a dark bow and gunwales, a yellow deck and red bottom. It took to the northern reaches of the river and Minnesota’s lakes like, well, a duck to water. The most notable feature of the design was its abbreviated transom wrapped by a rear deck that sloped to the waterline, not all that different from the teak swim platform he would find today on the Larson Cabrio 370. His little Falls Flyer was built first in wood and later, keeping pace with the times, in aluminum. The yard followed with brightly colored boats sporting such names as Pla-Boy and Thunderhawk, the latter with Detroit-inspired tail fins. ...
