The first major boat shows of the fall season have come and gone, and, from all known accounts, they were a great success. The back-to-back U.S. Sailboat and Powerboat Shows kicked things off nicely in Annapolis. While I can remember more than one occasion when Annapolis boat show attendees were greeted with snow, this year’s shows enjoyed tremendously warm weather. Annapolis serves as a great host for a show and several members of the Southern Boating family were on hand to meet some new friends and renew old aquaintances. If you’ve never been to either of the Annapolis shows, I definitely recommend checking them out.
From what I hear, the show docks were full and people were in the buying mood. This seems to portend well for the industry as it is hopefully an indicator of positive things to come. Both the sailboat and powerboat shows have come a long way over the years, and if we are using them as a bellwether for boat show season, then things are looking up.
At the powerboat show, we even ran into world renowned naval architect Ron Holland. Known for his sailboat designs, Ron has partnered with another name well known in sailing circles, Trintella, for a stunning new Down East-style cruiser. You can get a first look at this boat in this month’s Designer’s Choice on page 18.
With the holidays and vacation time upon us, we turn our focus to chartering in this issue. Chartering is a great way to experience a destination that may be beyond your boat’s normal cruising range or even a great way to try out a different type of boat and determine if you like it. Crewed or bareboat, the choice is yours, and the freedom and security that chartering provides is unmatched. Inside we offer charter ideas spanning the globe, from Antarctica and French Polynesia to destinations closer to home like the Chesapeake and the Bahamas. So whether you plan on bringing the kids along or are looking for an adults-only escape, you’ll find advice on planning that perfect trip. Just remember to use a broker to ensure you find the best charter suited to your needs and you get what you pay for.
Speaking of holidays, be sure to take a look at our annual Holiday Gift Guide. It is full of great gift ideas for everyone on your shopping list. From your first mate to your boat, we have ideas ranging from under $15 to over a $1 million. Personally, I’ve got my eye on the mini-sub, but I would take that Rolex, too. I hope I have been more nice than naughty.
On a sadder note, we lost a dear friend recently with the passing of Lindsey Forde. A professional boat captain and tournament angler, Lindsey was well liked and well respected by all in the marine community. He passed away doing what he loved, and he will be deeply missed.
Such an event makes me reflect upon the importance of my friends and family and the holidays serve to deepen those feelings and bring us all together. So this holiday season, raise a glass to those you hold dear in your lives and enjoy your time together. From all of us at Southern Boating, “Happy holidays and a healthy and prosperous new year to you and yours.”
