Everything from serious yacht racing to hilarious beachside donkey races, will highlight the Carriacou Regatta Festival, set for August 3-10, on Carriacou, off Grenada's north shore.
Established in 1965 by the late Linton. J. Riggs, a Jamaican-born yachtsman who settled on the 15-mile-long island in the early 1950s, the festival began as a racing event to commemorate the Emancipation holiday. Today, says regatta committee chairman Dexter Leggard, "The main aim of the festival is to perpetuate the indigenous art of boatbuilding handed down to us by our Irish and Scottish ancestors." ...
