Dieter Empacher has more than 30 years of yacht design experience, much of it in sailing yachts. Before opening his own yacht design and consulting firm in Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1982, he was Ted Hood’s Chief Designer. Since then, he has had 80 individual designs on the drawing board, ranging from kayaks to comfortable cruising sailboats up to 80 feet and various powerboats.

In 2000, he designed Comet, a 42-foot commuter-style express launch, for a client in Florida. This year, Comet’s owner asked for a 31-foot center console boat styled to complement his 1920s period launch. The interesting twist is that for all her retro styling, the boat is being built in aluminum–the plates cut by waterjet–and will be driven by state-of-the-art Hamilton waterjet propulsion.
Every detail is finished with teak, even the trim of the center console plus the windowframes and top. The open boat has laid teak decking and teak combing and a traditional hemp rope rubrail and stainless fittings.
The sharp, V-bottom design has an outer chine and inner spray rail, and a dead-rise of 20º at the transom. The waterjet is covered by a teak swim/boarding platform. ...
