Team Racing Action at
Lauderdale Yacht Club
With the action close to shore and several lead changes in every race, team racing is an exciting spectator sport for sailing enthusiasts. Add to that a dash of youthful enthusiasm, and you have the III Lauderdale Yacht Club Trophy. The 2008 regatta consisted of 131 races sailed in International Optimist Dinghies (Optis) by skippers 15 years of age or younger.
While this is the third year that Lauderdale Yacht club has hosted this regatta, this is the first year for the Lauderdale Yacht Club Trophy, a perpetual award, which features four copper Optis twirling in a circle above a map of the world.
The pair has been sailing together since they met, nearly two decades ago. Most often Jeff is at the helm and Amy is forward of the shrouds, because, according to Amy, “He’s really good helming.” If you ask Jeff, it’s “because I really suck at foredeck.”
“Have fun,” is their advice to couples who venture off in sailboats together. “From the start, we decided it was more important to stay married than to sail together,” said Jeff. Amy profoundly adds, “There are as many ways to be a happy couple as there are couples. Just because it doesn’t work on the water doesn’t mean it doesn’t work.”
For couples who are considering racing together, Amy advises, “Learn to sail separately, and figure out not to react defensively to criticism, at least on the water.” ...
Olympic-bound
With the 2008 Olympic Games taking place August 8-24, sailors traveled to China in June to get a head start practicing in Qingdao’s tricky sailing conditions. Olympic Sailing Committee Chairman Dean Brenner says the Olympic sailors have prepared stateside by looking for similarly challenging conditions–light, lumpy and with a lot of current. Conditions in Qingdao are expected to be tough, and as the U.S. representative Laser Radial sailor Anna Tunnicliffe has reported, the weather has been extremely foggy, which has it made it difficult for sailors to meet up with training partners on the water. ...
